How to tell if your dog is cold. Do they needs a coat?

Yes, dogs have fur. However, many times, that fur isn’t nearly enough to keep them comfortable in the winter time. Do you know what to look for to determine if your dog is one that needs help?

Do dogs get cold?

Some dogs do get cold sometimes.  It depends on the breed, their age, and their health, among other factors.  But how can you tell if your dog is feeling the chill?

You’ll often see little dogs like these chihuahuas wearing various types of clothing. While some of it might seem pretty frivolous, these little guys have lots of reasons why they need help staying warm.

How can you tell if your dog is cold?

There are several things to watch for so you know if your dog is cold and needs some help.

1) Your dog might shiver.  If it's extreme, you can see it.  But if they're cold, you can feel your dog shivering, even if it's not apparent when you look at them.

2)  Going outside isn't as much fun if your dog is cold, so they might refuse or hesitate to go out.

3)  Dogs curl up into a ball for several reasons, but being cold is undoubtedly one of them, so if your dog is curled up, they might be uncomfortable.

4)   If your dog isn't warm enough, they might stand with their tail tucked and head down.  Usually, their back will be arched up too.

Smooth coated dogs like this whippet have a difficult time staying warm when the weather turns cold since they’re built for the heat.

What if it's not cold yet?

If the weather is still warm, you probably won't see any of the signs I just listed.  But you can probably predict whether or not your dog will get uncomfortable with the cold. Here are some factors to consider. Does your dog

1)  live in a cooler climate?

2)  have a smooth coat?

3)  have a small stature?

4)  have a lean build?

5) show signs of aging like decreased muscle mass?

6) have the characteristics of a dog that was bred for warm climates?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are pretty good that your dog won't be able to stay comfortably warm without help.

Bigger dogs can get cold too, if they are smooth coated and/or elderly like this sweet girl. A warm coat makes a huge difference.

Does your dog need a coat?

You decide. Do you want your dog to merely survive, or do you want them to be comfortable?   Chances are that they'll live through being cold most of the time, but they might be pretty miserable.  They'll probably feel better if you get them some sort of coat to keep them comfortable. And won't you feel better if you help your dog be comfortable, as well?
