How do you know if that dog coat fits your dog or not?

A dog coat can be a fantastic investment for keeping your best friend comfortable.

You got your dog a coat

You decided to get a coat for your dog and made that purchase. Maybe you shopped several places or sites, considered the needs of your dog and you, and chose what seemed to be the perfect one. Now that the coat is on your dog, how do you know if it fits well enough?

Most people have purchased clothing or shoes at some point that seemed right but on wearing them found out that they didn't feel good after all.  Maybe the proportions were wrong.  Or the item was too long. Possibly the sizing was ok but it just didn't feel right. It happens to your dog too; they just can't tell you what's happening.

How can you tell if your dog’s coat fits them? First of all, how does it look? Does it cover where it should and lay like it’s supposed to?

It looks ok

When you put that coat on your dog, what do you see?  How is the length?  Does it seem to cover the right places?  Even though it looks like it fits, your dog might not feel the same way.  A coat that is too long can get cumbersome while one that is too short might be out of proportion in other ways too. What else can you do to confirm that your new purchase fits your dog well?

Does your dog feel ok moving in their new coat? They should be able to walk and run without feeling restricted in their movement.

Things to check to confirm that it actually fits

- Putting the coat on your dog is the first thing to check. If it goes on well, that's a good start.

-  One thing to watch for is whether your dog resists when you go to put it on. While that could just mean they need to get used to it, it also could be a sign that something isn't quite right.  Your dog won't want it on if it doesn't feel good.

-  If the neck is closed, does his head easily go through without too much slack?  If it's too tight, your dog isn't going to like it.  If the neck is too loose, your dog could possibly get feet tangled or it could interfere with the legs.

-  Any place that opens and closes should have a good connection without being too tight.  The coat shouldn't be too loose either. Too tight or too loose can make it hard for your dog to move.

-  Now, watch how your dog stands, sits and moves.  Are they stiff or do they look natural?  When you ask them to move, do they move freely or is something off?  Can they run and play with it on?

Since your dog can't tell you, you have to do the detective work. But with a little thought, you can figure out quite a bit. If you want to help your dog be comfortable, it's worth the effort.  They’ll be happy to wear that new outfit if it feels good.
