Dog Pajamas; are they right for your dog?

Dog pajamas can be extremely useful in the changing weather of spring.

Camping at altitude can also present weather situations that get a bit chilly, even in the summertime.

Some dogs need pajamas.

Do dogs NEED pajamas? Not all of them.  Dogs like Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, or Malamutes don’t need pajamas since their fur gives them all the insulation they need, both from heat and cold. But what about other dogs?  Dogs like chihuahuas or whippets that have a lean build and a slick coat aren't equipped for the cold, so they often need a little help in the form of a coat or pajamas.

Choosing the right pajamas for your dog

If you're shopping for jammies, you'll see a variety of different ones. They are designed for specific purposes, like warmth, keeping your dog clean, protection, etc. If you want pajamas that provide warmth and comfort, here's what you need.

1)  Made of fleece fabric.  Fleece can come in various weights.  The higher the weight, the warmer and thicker the fabric, in general.  If you're shopping for a small dog, a fabric that is too thick can actually restrict movement, so knowing what you want can make a difference. 

2)  Pajamas that provide maximum coverage. Warmth equals insulation which means covering exposed body parts.  It can be a balance to cover the body and still allow pottying.  Plus, if the PJs need to be pulled on in one piece, the access hole has to be big enough to allow that.  You'll want to take a look at the way the outfit is intended to fit a dog and decide what's best.

3)  Tailored for comfort.  If you've ever worn pants that are too small, you'll understand the importance of this one.  You can get through the day, but you're probably not going to be able to relax in them.  The same thing goes for your dog.
